Kumar Sangakkaa and the responsible beating of Shoaib Malik
helped the Multan sultans defeat defending champions Peshawar Zalmi in the
first game of the third edition of the Pakistan Super League in Dubai on
Thursday.
After opting to give a bowl first, Sultans produced an
impressive show with the bowl to restrict Darren Sammy's Zalmi to only 151 for
the loss of six wickets in their 20 overs. Mohammad Hafeez finished as the best
scorer for Zalmi with 59 out of 52 with the help of six fours and a six.
For the sultans, left arm high-ranking Mohammad Irfan was
the star of the show while claiming two wickets and only delivering 19 races. In
pursuit of 152, the sultans underwent an initial coup when opener Ahmad Shahzad
left unmarked.
However, Sangakkara stabilizes the innings, first with
Sohaib Maqsood and then with captain Malik to ensure there are no obstacles for
the new entrants, when the sultans crossed the victory with five balls to
spare.
Sangakkara finished the entries with the maximum score of
57 out of 51 balls with the help of three and two six while Malik scored 42
wins out of 30 balls with the help of two and two six.
For Zalmi, pacer Wahab Riaz was the most successful player
of the night when he claimed two wickets.
